Recognizing the critically important role that Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) will play in a low carbon future for transportation, CALSTART is taking the lead in convening “Jumpstarting Renewable Natural Gas for Transportation,” a national Workshop designed to create a roadmap that culminates in widespread use of the clean burning fuel. In partnership with the Southern California Gas Company, Clean Energy and Westport Innovations, the one-day event will showcase leaders in fleet management, technology, research, national planning, and facility owners and operators.
CALSTART has long been involved in facilitating state, national and international dialogue around strategies to make RNG (also known as biomethane) a viable near-term fuel for transportation. Using agricultural and municipal waste, as well as forest residue, biological waste is converted into biogas which is used to power electrical generators, turbines, or fuel cells to generate electricity. The Workshop focus is specifically on transportation including necessary policies and regulations, production and distribution, vehicle demonstrations, pricing, and steps to make the fuel work for fleets.
In addition to CALSTART’s John Boesel, speakers include Hal Snyder, Southern California Gas; Jim Boyd and Peter Ward, California Energy Commission; Marianne Mintz, Argonne National Lab; Chris Cassidy, U.S. Department of Agriculture; and, Catherine Dunwoody, Hydrogen Fuel Cell Partnership. Industry speakers include Harrison Clay, Clean Energy; Steve Eckhardt, Linde Group; Bill Liss, GTI; and, Bill Zobel, Trillium. The companies representing the fleet perspective include Coca-Cola ; Waste Management; and, CR&R.
Jumpstarting RNG for Transportation will be held Thursday, November 18 from 8:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. at the Southern California Gas Company Energy Research Center in Downey, California. The cost to attend is $195 for CALSTART Members, Clean Cities Coordinators, Government, and Fleets who register by October 29. After that the fee is $245. Non-Members pay $245 until October 29 and then the fee is $275. Members of the press, please contact MK Campbell at
