CLEAN SYSTEMS

New Systems - Using Vehicles Differently

Improving transportation involves more than just changing vehicle hardware and fuels but also changing the way in which vehicles are used: the system. A key area of innovation is re-inventing ways to move people more cleanly and efficiently, with and without vehicles. This reduces vehicle miles traveled (VMT), traffic congestion, and therefore reduces fuel use, carbon and smog emissions. Some approaches include:
  • Enhanced and expanded transit use
         o bus rapid transit systems
         o transit-connected mobility systems
  • Bikes, scooters and custom commuting vehicles
  • More energy-efficient city transportation design and planning
  • Transit-oriented development
  • Multi-modal freight shipping (rail, truck)
  • Applying new technology to help manage travel demand
  • Creating multi-mobility cities of tomorrow by integrating land use and sustainable transportation practices
