Jumpstarting Renewable Natural Gas for Transportation:
Connecting Producers, Distributors and Fleet Users
CALSTART partnered with the Southern California Gas Company and sponsors Clean Energy and Westport Innovations to present this one day workshop on the possibilities of renewable natural gas (RNG)* as a clean transportation fuel.
RNG, the lowest carbon fuel option, holds tremendous promise for transportation. Production, storage, fueling, distribution and policy support are all critical to bringing it to market in a meaningful way. CALSTART and the Southern California Gas Company are jumpstarting the conversation to focus on how to make RNG a viable transportation fuel in the shortest amount of time possible.
This action plan- based workshop evaluated the potential for transportation market segments and their fleets, and the subsequent value to existing and potential RNG producers and distributors. Workshop topics included the state of the RNG industry for transportation; regulatory strategies; production and distribution advances; potential for transportation markets, and insights from end users. The lunch presentation featured Coca-Cola Enterprises compressed RNG powered truck trial results as presented by Steven Saltzgiver, Director of Fleet Operations North America, and David Mellon, Fleets & Logistics European Category Manager. The other sessions engaged national experts, fleets, policymakers, and producers to develop an action plan that will become the basis for building an RNG market for transportation.
